Zayo buys into Michigan, Ohio markets

Regional telecom provider Zayo Group has added Ann Arbor, Mich., Lansing, Mich. and Toledo, Ohio, to its expanding network, completing its purchase of the network and associated CLEC operations there from CenturyTel. Zayo also has expanded its fiber footprint in Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Akron, Ohio, through the deal with CenturyTel. The acquisition was its eighth since 2007.

The deal adds 54 on-net locations and 180 route miles to its core fiber network of 18,700 metro and regional fiber route miles, serving more than 1,200 on-net locations in 20 states.

"By listening carefully to customers' needs and offering custom and scalable solutions in Tier II and III markets such as these, we are able to deliver carriers and large bandwidth users cost-effective options for fiber-based bandwidth connectivity," said John Scarano, COO of Zayo Group and President of Zayo Bandwidth.

Zayo, based in Louisville, Colo., provides bandwidth, voice and managed services to carrier, enterprise, SME and government customers. Zayo Group provides its service over a fiber network that spans 125 markets in 20 states. It owns and operates fiber optic networks in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Pacific Northwest, with additional metro coverage in Memphis, Tenn.

It had revenues of $170 million last year.
