Zayo is enhancing its 100G presence in the busy Northeast region by deploying a 100G wavelength network from New York to Ashburn, Va.

The service provider said this route will provide diverse connections from its existing 100G route following the I-95 corridor.

By expanding this route, Zayo will be able to meet the needs of large regional financial customers and others that need diverse connectivity between these two cities. In addition, Zayo will be able to originate and terminate add/drop 100G service capabilities in four locations including: New York City; Newark, N.J.; Philadelphia; and Ashburn.

This route follows the debut of the New York City-to-Philadelphia and Philadelphia-to-Washington, D.C. routes it launched in January. Zayo will be able more effectively compete with a growing base of competitive and incumbent providers like Lightower and Verizon, both of which have been building up their 100G capabilities in recent years along these very routes.

Each of these 100G wavelength-based network builds are part of a broader initiative it launched in late 2012. At that time the service provider launched a national 100G network from which it will offer wavelength services in a number of major markets in the United States.

Zayo's 100G wavelength platforms is operational in 28 U.S. locations, providing connectivity to key traffic aggregation points and IP nodes on intercity and metro routes including New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and the western corridor between Seattle and Los Angeles.

The service provider's 100G wavelength efforts will be able to capitalize on the fiber networks it has acquired over the past seven years and its own organic network buildouts.

While its voracious acquisition strategy could be viewed as risky, the service provider has found a way to make it work. During its fiscal second-quarter financial reporting period, Zayo's earnings rose 14 percent t to $274 million due to new customer installations and acquisition growth.
