H3G, an Austrian wireless operator, has become the latest service provider to incorporate 100G optical technology on its optical backhaul network to support the consumer's demand for wireless data.
The wireless operator, which says it handles the largest volume of mobile broadband traffic in Austria, will incorporate Alcatel-Lucent's (NYSE: ALU) coherent technology to expand the capacity on its existing fiber network.
What's interesting about the deployment is that it won't disrupt current operations as it's being conducted as an in-service upgrade.
Specifically, H3G Austria will leverage Alcatel-Lucent's 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and the 1626 Light Manager (LM). Keeping with the network reuse theme, the two systems will allow the mobile operator to deploy a mix of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on one fiber pair, while upgrading and expanding capacity on the network as it transitions to LTE.
For Alcatel-Lucent, this is yet another European win they can cite on their growing 100G optical roster that they can cite when talking to potential new customers or existing customers that are considering a move to 100G.
