Google Fiber to extend fiber to more Kansas City-area neighborhoods

Google Fiber (Nasdaq: GOOG) is going to put its much talked about 1 Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) service into the hands of more customers with plans to roll out service to more locations in the Kansas City area.

According to a company blog post, residents in south Kansas City, Kansas City, north, Grandview, Raytown and Gladstone can start signing up this week to get the service.

The Internet search giant has encouraged potential area customers to go to the website and sign up for service. After paying a $10 registration fee, they can choose one of three fiber service plans including: a Gigabit+TV, Gigabit Internet and a Free Internet option.

Similar to other areas where it is building the FTTH service, Google has told would-be customers to spread the word about the service.

"We've clustered homes across the KC area into small groupings called "fiberhoods" (you can see which fiberhood you're in on our website)," said Carlos Casas, Kansas City field team manager, in a blog post. "Your fiberhood has a goal — a certain number of homes that need to sign up for Google Fiber. You'll be able to see a real-time count on our website that shows you what your goal is, and how many more people in your fiberhood need to sign-up. If you and your neighbors meet this goal, we'll aim to bring you Google Fiber by the end of this year."

A few weeks after the sign-up deadline, the plan is to start connecting homes in each of the fiberhoods with the expectation of having all qualified fiberhoods connected by the end of 2014.

While Google has been making progress in rolling out its FTTH service in Kansas City, it hasn't been without its problems. In December, the service provider came under fire for placing a utility cabinet in the middle of a sidewalk.
