KPN, the dominant telco serving the Dutch market, on Tuesday announced it tapped Accenture to help it build its multi-element video offering.
Although neither company revealed terms of the deal, Accenture will provide its Video Solution to help KPN deliver its interactive TV service to various devices including TVs, tablet computers and smartphones.
Leveraging Accenture's software-based open architecture, KPN will be able to offer a number of new features to its iTV and iTV Online services, which it offers to retail and wholesale telecom customers.
"We will provide KPN a complete portfolio of innovative digital services that will enable subscribers to watch TV on more devices," said Marco Vernocchi, managing director of Accenture's Media & Entertainment industry group, in a release about the new agreement.
The iTV Online Services will use KPN's Content Delivery Network (CDN) for content streaming. KPN's CDN provides a mix of business-to-business and consumer services that incorporate new video standards to improve the viewing experience.
Some of the new services KPN will be able to deliver are a new 'catch-up' TV service which it says will allow users to select and view video on demand, and adaptive streaming for consistent quality of service experience.
Being able to name a large customer like KPN provides validation for Accenture's TV strategy. It also comes on the heels of its recent acquisition of Nokia Siemens Networks' IPTV division.
While this deal may or may not be related to that acquisition, Accenture can leverage the NSN software and IPTV network integration assets to further enhance the work it conducts with KPN and other potential customers in Europe and the U.S. market.
