Zayo brings dark fiber, wavelength services to UK provider TalkTalk

Zayo's new contract to provide competitive UK-based telecom-service provider TalkTalk with an expanded suite of services shows that the company's aggressive move into the European wholesale service market is paying off.

"Having the ability to deliver the capacity that TalkTalk requires on demand is further validation of our strategy of continuing to invest heavily in dark fibre capacity," said Alastair Kane, European vice president for Zayo, in a release.

By using Zayo's wholesale products, TalkTalk said it would be able to offer its quad-play set of services to 4 million UK customers.

Under the terms of the new contract, which will be delivered by the end of Q3 2014, Zayo will provide TalkTalk with a number of network services, including 10G wavelengths within the UK and across Europe, an increase in IP transit-service speeds from 30G to 50G, and 10G transatlantic services from London to New York.

In addition, Zayo said TalkTalk will be able to use seven of Zayo's new dark-fiber circuits on an individual-fiber basis over the next few months, as demand requires.

As in the United States, Zayo has been expanding its presence throughout Europe via targeted acquisitions, including Geo Networks and Neo Telecoms.

Geo Networks gives Zayo an expanded presence in the United Kingdom (including Wales and the London metro area) and Ireland. When Zayo completes its acquisition of Neo Telecoms, which is expected at the end of the third quarter of 2014, it will have an immediate presence in France.
