Google Fiber in the past month has picked up steam in its network expansion, announcing several new cities across Idaho, Kansas, Utah and more. Fierce took a closer look at where construction will begin and when consumers can expect to sign up for service.
Chubbuck, ID
Shortly after unveiling Pocatello as its first market in Idaho, Google Fiber disclosed the city of Chubbuck would be its next target in the state. Chubbuck, which is located immediately north of Pocatello, has a population of roughly 15,800.
Google Fiber’s website indicates it’s in the planning process of its buildout in Chubbuck and Pocatello. A grant filing from earlier this year showed Google Fiber is also interested in expanding to the state capital, Boise.
Leawood, KS
The operator continues to turn up service in the Kansas City metro area. Select consumers in Leawood, Kansas can now sign up for Google Fiber’s symmetrical 1-gig, 2-gig as well as the 5-gig plan, which launched in February across four markets. A Google Fiber spokesperson confirmed to Fierce the Leawood expansion was announced in July 2022, and construction began in February.
Construction is still in progress in the Leawood area, so not all addresses are eligible yet. But Google Fiber has said it’s “working [its] way through the rest of Leawood in the months to come.”
Liberty, MO
Liberty is the second Kansas City metro market Google Fiber announced in May. It just finalized a license agreement with the city, but so far Google Fiber hasn’t disclosed when it expects construction to begin. According to BroadbandNow, competing providers in Liberty include AT&T Fiber, Spectrum and T-Mobile’s 5G Home Internet.
Elsewhere in the Kansas City area, Google Fiber serves cities such as Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa, Roeland Park, Prairie Village, Raytown, Gladstone, and Grandview.
Logan, UT
Google Fiber last month signed a licensing agreement with Logan, Utah, a city of around 54,000 that’s located about halfway between Pocatello and Salt Lake City. The operator said Logan is its northernmost Utah city to date, and it expects to start construction later this year.
In Utah, Google Fiber is also available in the Salt Lake City and Provo metro areas. The operator spokesperson added its complete product offering, which includes its 1-gig, 2-gig, 5-gig and 8-gig tiers, will be available in both Logan and Chubbuck once they are ready for service.
Franklin, TN
Google Fiber isn’t limiting its expansion to the Western states. It also signed a licensing agreement with the city of Franklin, Tennessee. Franklin touts a population of over 80,000 and is located around 19 miles southeast of Nashville, another Google Fiber hub.
“Google Fiber’s reputation speaks for itself, and we are excited for Google Fiber to be part of our community,” said Franklin Mayor Ken Moore in a statement last month. “Our citizens, schools and corporations will all benefit from this new gigabit internet service.”
Construction in Franklin is expected to begin early next year, with Google Fiber beginning to serve customers in late 2024.
