Lumen expands its edge computing offers into Europe

Lumen Technologies is expanding its edge computing solutions into Europe, starting with the U.K., France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands with additional locations planned by the end of the year. The company said that Lumen Edge Computing solutions can meet approximately 70% of enterprise demand in these European countries within 5 milliseconds of latency.

As part of the European deployment, Lumen enabled an additional 100G MPLS and IP network connectivity, as well as increased power and cooling at key edge data center locations.

Annette Murphy, regional president, EMEA and APAC for Lumen Technologies, said in a statement, "Customers in Europe can now tap into the power of the Lumen platform, underpinned by Lumen's extensive fiber footprint, to deploy data-heavy applications and workloads that demand ultra-low latency at the cloud edge."

Last year around this time, Lumen indicated it would put more of a focus on Europe. Unlike Lumen’s U.S. business, the company’s EMEA operation does not include a consumer segment, focusing instead on enterprise and wholesale offerings.

In terms of its new Lumen Edge Computing for Europe, it will bring together the company's expansive global fiber network, on-demand networking, integrated security, and managed services, with edge facilities and compute and storage services. This allows for quick deployment of applications and workloads at the edge, closer to the point of digital interaction.

According to the company, customers can procure Lumen Edge Computing solutions online, and within one hour gain access to high-powered computing infrastructure on the Lumen platform.

The solutions portfolio includes:

  • Lumen Edge Bare Metal
  • Lumen Network Storage
  • Lumen Edge Private Cloud
  • Lumen Edge Gateway

Lumen’s peered network is comprised of about 500,000 global route miles of fiber and more than 190,000 on-net buildings, connected to 2,200 public and private third-party data centers and leading public cloud service providers. In EMEA, the Lumen network is comprised of approximately 42,000 route miles of fiber and connects to more than 2,500 on-net buildings and 540 public and private third-party data centers.
