The 10 highest paid CEOs in wireline in 2014

By Sean Buckley

The nation's top telcos have all reported their CEO salaries to the Securities and Exchange Commission, and FierceTelecom has collected all the data in one place. Below are the salary and compensation rates of the top 10 highest paid CEOs in the wireline industry.

There aren't any big surprises in our list. Similar to 2011, 2012 and 2013, the highest paid wireline telecom executives were once again Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) Lowell McAdam and AT&T's (NYSE: T) Randall Stephenson.

However, as with last year's executive compensation report, there were fluctuations in terms of total compensation.

Verizon's McAdam and Stephenson both reported that their compensation rose slightly from 2013 to 2014 (the most recently available numbers). McAdam's compensation rose from just a bit over $15.8 million in 2013 to $18 million in 2014. Likewise, Stephenson saw his compensation rise slightly from $23.2 million in 2013 to $24 million in 2014.

Glen Post, CEO of CenturyLink, saw the largest increase during that period; his pay jumped to $13 million in 2014, up from $9 million in 2013. Likewise, Level 3's CEO Jeff Storey saw his pay jump to $10.1 million from $8 million, a reversal of the decline when he took over as CEO from company founder James Crowe in 2013.

But these changes weren't limited to the big telcos.

2014 was also a time of management transition in the Tier 2 telco market as Consolidated, Frontier and Windstream all named new CEOs to lead their companies. Robert Udell, Daniel McCarthy and Tony Thomas, who are now the CEOs of Consolidated, Frontier and Windstream, respectively, are all 10-plus-year company veterans.

While McCarthy and Thomas saw their total compensation rise to $3.9 and $3.3 million, respectively, Udell's dropped to $846,825 from $1.3 million in 2013.

Meanwhile, Ted Torbeck, CEO of Cincinnati Bell Communications, also saw his total compensation drop from $5.3 million in 2013 to $3.34 million in 2014.

Check out the 10 highest-paid CEOs below. The data comes from filings the companies have made to the SEC.
