Location: Canby, Ore.
Why it's so cutting edge: The 104-year-old rural telco made our list of Fierce 15 IPTV Innovators last year. It was among the first telcos to take advantage of the IP-Prime content delivery package developed by SES Americom and the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC). The telco now is offering MPEG-4 HD channels, and is among a small handful of like-sized telco that has made the jump from MPEG-2.
But can it keep its edge? Canby hasn't had huge line loss yet, but it's inevitable, and having exited the wireless market already, Canby could be vulnerable. Could rural telco consolidation come calling?
