FastWeb - Top 10 Service Providers on the Cutting Edge

FastWeb

Why it's so cutting-edge: FastWeb, based in Milan, Italy, was the first telco in Europe, and among the first in the world, to offer video on demand over DSL and over a fiber-to-the-home network. It also was ahead of the game with triple play services, has begun investing in fixed-mobile convergence, and recently announced a major network expansion that will carry it into new markets. This company is the second-largest wireline telco in Italy, though its future will be funded by Swisscom, which acquired Fastweb in May.

But can it keep that edge? The main opposition for FastWeb is Telecom Italia, and regulators are forcing that incumbent to split its structure into wholesale and retail units, a practice which has met with mixed result in other countries. Sometimes the incumbent is better off, sometimes it struggles out of the gate. Some of FastWeb’s future luck will depend on that split and whether or not Italian regulators give Telecom Italia incentives, something to which FastWeb obviously is opposed.
