Kristine Faulkner, vice president of product development and management, Cox Business - 2010 Top Women in Wireline

Kristine FaulknerKristine Faulkner, vice president of product development and management, Cox Business, may work for the cable industry, but she's helped establish her company's presence as one of the RBOC's new business service competitors has grown since the cable MSO began offering wholesale fiber services to IXCs and other providers in the early 1990s.

Faulkner's influence on Cox Business is well known. Since coming aboard the Cox Business team in 2004, Faulkner has put their business service suite-one that includes Cox Business Internet (business-grade cable modem service), Cox Optical Internet, Web Hosting, local and long-distance voice, business video, and Ethernet.

One of the services that Cox Business continues to innovate on is clearly Ethernet. As of the end of 2009, Cox Business once again came in as the fourth major Ethernet carrier, trailing only AT&T and Verizon, on Vertical Systems Group's Ethernet leaderboard.

Kristine Faulkner vital statsOffering its service over both its HFC and fiber facilities, Faulkner believes its advantage over incumbents is that they don't have to support a suite of TDM-based services. "Unlike the incumbents, we don't have to worry about cannibalizing a large base of legacy services," Faulkner said in a previous interview with FierceTelecom. "Instead, we can position the right solution for the customer."

But Faulkner's rise into the wireline industry wasn't your traditional telecom executive story. Unlike many telecom executives that started their careers either running a business segment or as an engineer, Faulkner found her way into the telecom industry through the newspaper industry where she began as a photographer and then worked her way into business development roles in online media.

A vocal proponent of advancing the role of women in the cable industry and business community, Faulkner was awarded named to the 2010 Class of Multichannel News Wonder Womenand is an active member of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) as a co-chair of its business services council.
