Phil Meeks, Cox BusinessPhil Meeks, Senior VP of Cox Business, is used to being on the competitive side of the telecom industry.

Meeks joined Cox Business in June 2008 after spending 20 years at the former MCI, now Verizon Business (NYSE: VZ), in various management roles. Similar to fellow Cox Business executive Mark Kaish, Meeks also spent time working in the traditional service provider industry with roles at the former AT&T (NYSE: T) and Southern Bell.

Interestingly, Meeks' last role at MCI as senior vice president of strategic ventures and alliances has a cable industry connection. Part of building that business from $0 to $200 million in revenue in two years included the CableNet initiative to sell consumer IP-based telephony services through multiple cable providers.

Two years after joining Cox Business in June 2008, Meeks saw the MSO's business unit reach its most significant milestone: $1 billion in annual sales. Of course, this milestone did not come overnight as the MSO's business unit has been delivering services over its respective HFC and fiber networks to both SMBs and wholesale services to carrier customers, including wireless operators.

In a recent interview with FierceTelecom, Meeks attributed Cox Business' success has been achieved by focusing on providing solutions for the SMB market (20 employee businesses and below) that's often ignored by the larger service providers.  

"When you look at how we do business, I think our success is the result of two things: building the right products for that low end of the SMB and having those local resources in the markets selling and serving those customers," he said.  

Arguably one of the first cable operators to make serious move into the business arena, Cox Business' focus on fundamentals like good customer service and satisfaction, could serve as a model for other large MSOs like Comcast and Charter that are expanding their focus on the business segment.  

Two service areas in which the MSO's unit continues to shine are Ethernet and voice services. Not only has Cox ranked as the fourth largest provider of Ethernet services in the U.S. based on customer ports, according to Vertical Systems Group's biannual Ethernet Leaderboard, but it is currently the seventh largest voice service provider, supporting over 800,000 business voice lines.

But don't expect Cox Business to rest on those laurels.

As Cox Business looks to reach the next billion in revenue, Meeks and the Cox Business team will not only continue its focus on providing a good customer experience, but also expand its reach into emerging areas like managed Software as a Service (SaaS) applications.
