Why it's so cutting-edge: Another visitor from our 2007 list of Honorable Mentions is yet another carrier with an Ethernet emphasis. After acquiring U.S.-based Yipes and executing a corporate restructuring, Reliance Globalcom is strengthening its presence in the U.S. with an Ethernet upgrade project. Yet, with undersea cables and other networks and services at its disposal around the world, it is becoming not just a formidable U.S. competitor, but a global brand name.
But can it keep its edge? Much has been made of the sibling rivalry between the brothers who run Reliance Communications (Globalcom's parent) and Reliance Industries. It may not affect things on a day-to-day level, but it already cost Reliance a major international wireless acquisition. In any case, the rivalry makes Reliance more interesting than most U.S. telcos.
