Rising stars in wireline: Future leaders to watch in 2014

By Sean Buckley

Sean Buckley, Rising StarsCEOs may be the figures who direct the tone and direction of a company, but part of their leadership is also defined by supporting executives who help innovate. These are the risk takers who work behind the scenes driving new products, solutions and initiatives to lead a company forward.

We take a look at eight up-and-coming executives in our third annual Rising Stars in Wireline.

The time to innovate couldn't be any more pressing for the wireline segment of the telecom industry. North American service providers are in a state of flux as they look to shut down their 100-year-old TDM-based networks and go all-IP. This transition comes with a number of technology and regulatory shifts that new FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has made a priority for 2014.

Besides the ongoing technology shift, traditional wireline operators, particularly those that don't have a wireless business, are branching out into new areas, such as providing cloud services and selling fiber-to-the-tower (FTTT) service to wireless operators.

These are the people who are propelling network transition, launching new service initiatives and developing network buildout strategies to respond to emerging consumer and business services demands.

Meet this year's rising stars of wireline:

alcatel basil alwan Basil Alwan, president of IP at Alcatel-Lucent
comptel angie kronenberg Angie Kronenberg, chief advocate and general counsel, COMPTEL
tds phil laforge Phil LaForge, president, One Neck IT Solutions
fairpoint john lunny John Lunny, senior vice president & CTO, FairPoint Communications

fiberlight john schmitt John Schmitt, chief development officer, Fiberlight
comcast mike tighe Mike Tighe, executive director of data services, Comcast Business Services

These are the people we see as driving the wave of innovation in the wireline segment of the telecom industry. Will they rise to the top?
