Women in Wireline 2013: Leaders shaping telecom services, innovation, and policy

by Sean Buckley

Welcome to our fourth annual Women in Wireline feature, where FierceTelecom's editors recognize important women executives in the wireline segment of the telecom industry.

We profile women executives who are shaping the telecom industry with new services, driving innovation, and shaping telecom policy.

For much of its 100-plus year history, the telecom industry has been traditionally a male-dominated field, but there's an increasing presence of women in high-level executive roles at the large telcos, vendors, and industry forums.

With Women in Wireline being a celebration of diversity, our list also illustrates the different elements of the telecom ecosystem.

While we include representatives from three of the largest telcos--AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL)--we also list executives at competitive providers such as Global Capacity and industry associations like FTTH Americas and COMPTEL.

All of these women executives rose to their current positions from different starting points.

Take Diane McCarthy, senior vice president of Verizon's Network & Technology – Service Delivery & Assurance organization. Starting out as a central office technician in 1982 at AT&T, McCarthy now oversees 14,000 employees, the majority of whom serve in the same role that she once held.

Then there's Karen Reidy, vice president, regulatory affairs for COMPTEL. Reidy took the position in 2006 after working at MCI, one of telecom industry's original CLECs, for nine years.

Also, look at our past Women in Wireline honorees from 2012, 2011 and 2010.

If you feel there are other women in the wireline industry segment who deserve to be recognized for their talents and industry influence, please let us know.
