Cavalier Telephone launches fiber operator

Virginia-based independent telco Cavalier Telephone has launched a new subsidiary, Intellifiber Networks, that plans to exploit the capacity of a 16,000-mile fiber network that covers the East Coast and reaches into the Midwest to serve enterprise, wholesale and government markets.

The carrier said it has invested more than $1 billion in network supporting service offerings such as private networks, SONET, wavelength, Ethernet, data and voice. Former Qwest Communications and Cable & Wireless veteran Clint Heiden has been named president of Intellifiber Networks.

While nearly all market sectors have been hit in some respect by the slowing economy, government spending is seen as something of a haven. Also, some segments of enterprise or wholesale, such as mobile backhaul, should continue to deliver healthy revenue in the short term.
