P&TLuxembourg employs Alcatel-Lucent for 100G optical, Ethernet network

P&TLuxembourg is the latest service provider to take the 100G and 100 GigE plunge with an IP route between the Frankfurt and Luxembourg leg of its TERALINK network, with Alcatel-Lucent's (NYSE: ALU) support.

Similar to other recent 100G network deployments by Verizon (NYSE: VZ), P&TLuxembourg's network is set on delivering low latency services to support financial trading companies that are using new trading algorithms to be more competitive in addition to other businesses and the consumer's ongoing demand for richer content.

The main star on P&TLuxembourg's 100G network route is Alcatel-Lucent and its use of coherent modulation technology. For this deployment the service provider will leverage Alcatel-Lucent's 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), which the vendor says with the incorporation of optical coherent modulation can support 100G on each of the 88 wavelengths of an optical fiber.

In tandem with the PSS platform, P&T has expanded its existing 7750 SR platforms to support 100GigE for IP peering and data center interconnection traffic to key locations such as Frankfurt.

Coming a little over a week since Verizon announced the deployment 100G optical on more of its U.S.-based network routes, P&TLuxembourg's deployment provides new validity other service providers need to see as they begin deploying 100G on their respective networks.
