AT&T takes next step onto cloud market

AT&T, which dipped its toe into the cloud computing pool several months ago, this week announced an expansion of its cloud computing with Synaptic Storage as a Service. The service, which uses storage technology from vendor EMC, allows enterprise customers to store and access their data and files from a variety of wired and wireless Internet access devices. The service will roll out gradually this month, with a broader U.S. expansion later this year and an eventual international launch to come.

All different types of companies, including telcos and firms like IBM, Amazon and Microsoft, have been getting into cloud computing in recent months. It's shaping up to be another hotly competitive service sector that will test the ability of telcos to extend their reputations for reliability into an area that also demands nimble Internet-friendly action.
