The Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) is expanding its broadband network and has selected Fujitsu Network Communications as the primary broadband integrator for the project, which is part of a neighborhood revitalization initiative intended to promote business growth along the Florida Coast.
The FPUA provides electric, water, wastewater and natural gas services to the City of Fort Pierce. In the early 2000s, it also started offering dedicated internet service to businesses and in 2018 the FPUA board approved a plan for it to become a smart city and provide fiber broadband services.
This FPUA smart city initiative includes the deployment of fiber in Lincoln Park, which is one of the city’s revitalization zones. Fujitsu will handle the network design and fiber deployment for Lincoln Park. Service is expected to be available by early 2022 and the network will also support future wireless technology and public Wi-Fi.

This isn’t the first time Fujitsu has been selected to work with state-run networks. The company also is working with the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology to upgrade its state-run education network with SD-WAN.
