Deep packet inspection wasn't new as we entered 2008, and neither was the concept of targeted advertising. In fact, DPI already was under fire for its connection to Comcast's delaying of peer-to-peer Internet traffic, but its value continued to heighten as service providers considered targeted advertising as a way to increase the value of their broadband connections-for both customers and advertisers. Then came the news that some carriers allegedly were testing DPI to collect Internet usage information to fuel their potential targeted advertising programs without first telling the targeted customers. The issue made Congress's radar and the rest is history-or maybe we should say that attempts by broadband service providers to pursue targeted advertising strategies are history. Except they aren't: BT may be preparing to deploy Phorm, and telco TV service providers likely have targeted advertising on their roadmaps.
