U.K.-based toob has tapped Adtran to help it build a full fiber platform to deliver gigabit speeds to more than 100,000 premises by the end of 2021.

With rural areas largely underserved by broadband, the British government set forth a mandate of having full-fiber to every home in the U.K. That has led to plethora of fiber builds by new service providers such as a toob.

Liberty Global-owned Virgin Media is reportedly looking to expand its fiber network beyond urban areas in the U.K. via a wholesale fiber network joint venture. The JV would compete with BT's Openreach fiber build as well fiber newcomers such as toob, CityFibre, Gigaclear, and Hyperoptic.

Toob is targeting initial deployments of its gigabit service across the South of England. Adtran has provided toob with full turnkey support that included the delivery, installation and commissioning of toob’s core, transport and access network. Using the Adtran's TA5000 gigabit services platform, toob deployed its network—from initial concept to fully operational network—in a matter of months.

“The U.K.’s digital infrastructure is uncompetitive at present with only 8% of premises being able to access a full fiber connection. At toob we are committed to bringing the benefits of full fiber to all sectors of society in the communities in which we operate,” said toob CEO Nick Parbutt. “We are executing quickly to pass 100,000 premises by the end of 2021 on our way to passing more than 1 million premises over the next decade.

"Adtran has matched our ambitious pace with delivering our network into Southampton in a matter of months, and I look forward to developing a stronger partnership over the coming years.”
