AT&T (NYSE: T) has tapped Amdocs to serve as the integrator to help other service providers and enterprises that want to take advantage of its Enhanced Control, Orchestration, Management and Policy (ECOMP) virtualization platform to build software-centric services.
The telco, which created and developed ECOMP, recently committed to releasing the code into the open source community.
Under the terms of the agreement, Amdocs will help companies deploy that open source software into their own networks.
ECOMP is a software suite that spans the entire NFV service life cycle. Some of the benefits AT&T has touted with ECOMP is its ability to shorten service introduction times, improve operational efficiencies and drive agile data-driven service management of NFV and SDN functions and services.
"A system like ECOMP is very powerful as it allows us to build our next generation cloud-based network in a vendor agnostic way, giving us great flexibility for deploying NFV / SDN in our network," said John Donovan, chief strategy officer and group president for AT&T, in an interview with FierceTelecom. "It costs less than maintaining existing network systems, and it allows us to accelerate the implementation of new services quicker than ever before."
Amdocs and AT&T said they can help other companies create a single view of physical and virtual resources and services, rapid service design, master service orchestration and automated configuration and management.
AT&T itself has already implemented ECOMP in its software-based network, while Amdocs will help market the platform globally. AT&T and Amdocs will continue to enhance the platform through standardization and contributions to the open source community.
