Vitals: This service provider, based in Shallotte, N.C., was founded in the 1950s to serve the Brunswick County area of the state, including the barrier islands. It offers voice, cable TV, high-speed Internet, wireless and other services. Its cable TV customer base is about is about 20,000 households, and its DSL facilities serve about 15,200 customers.

Why you should care: An ATMC executive spoke at The Future of Broadband conference this week about the company's plan to deploy fiber-to-the-home in newly-developed parts of its markets.
