From AT&T to VMware: Tracking telecom, cable and cloud earnings for Q4 2021

It’s that time of year again! That’s right, it’s earnings season and Fierce Telecom is here to help you track the calendar Q4 2021 results from key fiber, cable and cloud companies.

Altice USA
Consolidated revenue was roughly flat year on year at $2.52 billion, though broadband revenue rose 3% to $972.9 million. The operator unveiled a substantial fiber expansion plan, aiming to extend its reach to a total of 6.5 million homes by the end of 2025.

AT&T
AT&T lost a total of 20,000 consumer wireline customers in Q4 as the addition of 271,000 fiber customers failed to offset the loss of 272,000 non-fiber broadband subscribers and 19,000 DSL customers. Consumer wireline revenue increased 1.4% to $3.2 billion, but business wireline revenue of $5.9 billion was down 5.6%.

AWS
AWS revenue jumped to $17.8 billion, up year on year from $12.7 billion. Operating income also rose double digits, increasing 48% to $5.3 billion. Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said during an earnings call AWS is “now a $71 billion annualized run rat business.”

Cable One
Consolidated revenue jumped 28.5% year on year to $432.6 million, with residential data revenue up 27.6% to $224.5 million. However, net income plummeted 39% to $64.8 million. The operator ended 2021 with 957,000 residential data primary service units.

Charter Communications
Charter added a total of 190,000 Internet customers in Q4 2021, down from 246,000 in Q4 2020. Consolidated revenue of $13.2 billion grew 4.7% year on year in Q4, with Internet sales up 11.6% to $5.4 billion.

Cogeco/Breezeline (formerly Atlantic Broadband)
Cogeco's U.S. broadband business Breezeline grew revenue 25% year on year to CAD363.5 million, but lost 77 internet customers. Its Canadian arm Connexion posted revenue of CAD355 million and added 2,620 internet customers. Consolidated revenue totaled CAD745.3 million.

Comcast
Comcast added 212,000 in Q4 2021, down year on year from 538,000, with executives attributing the slide to lower activity in the consumer marketplace. Broadband revenue rose 8.5% to almost $5.9 billion.

Frontier Communications
Consolidated revenue of $1.5 billion in Q4 was down year on year from nearly $1.7 billion, though net income improved from a loss of $50 million to a gain of $189 million. The operator posted 45,000 fiber net additions and 9,000 overall broadband net additions in Q4 2021.

Google Cloud
Google Cloud revenue grew 45% year on year to $5.5 billion, rising from $3.8 billion. Still, it posted a net loss of $890 million.Despite this, Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat said the company plans to “continue to invest aggressively in cloud given the sizable market opportunity we see.”

IBM/Red Hat
Consolidated revenue grew 6.5% year on year to $16.7 billion, with Software revenue up 8% to $7.3 billion. While the company did not provide a breakout revenue figure for Red Hat, it noted sales for the unit were up 19% year on year. Consulting revenue rose 13.1% to $4.7 billion while Infrastructure revenue was roughly flat at $4.4 billion.

Lumen Technologies
Lumen Technologies’ revenue fell 5.4% to $4.8 billion in Q4 2021 and the company offered weaker than expected guidance for 2022, reinforcing analyst skepticism about its ability to achieve a stated goal of returning to revenue growth within two to three years.

Mediacom
- Does not host earnings calls as a private company, but expected to release a Q4 update near the end of February.

Microsoft
Consolidated revenue hit a record $51.7 billion, with cloud revenue up 32% to $22.1 billion. Executives highlighted cloud deals with major players across a range of industries, including Johnson and Johnson, FedEx and CVS Health.

TDS Telecom
TDS Telecom’s 4Q revenue from residential broadband connections increased 4% to $57.86, while full-year revenue grew 2% to surpass $1 billion. It also outlined a plan to cover 60% of its footprint with fiber by 2026.

Verizon
The operator posted 106,000 total broadband net additions in the quarter. It added 55,000 Fios Internet customers in Q4 and 360,000 for the full year 2021, for its best annual Fios net add result in more than five years.

The company reported fiscal fourth quarter 2022 revenue of $3.53 billion, up 7% from the same quarter in fiscal 2021. Net income of $586 million compared to $791 million in same quarter of fiscal 2021.

WideOpenWest (WOW!)
Consolidated Q4 revenue fell 5% year on year to $178.3 million, and the company posted a net loss of $2.2 million. It gained 2,200 HSD customers in Q4, and 12,900 for the full year.

Windstream
Windstream added more than 55,000 broadband customers in 2021, a figure which was down slightly from its 2020 net additions. The company did not release financial metrics.
