Austin, TX has the fastest download speeds, says Pando Networks

According to a new Pando Networks report, Texas has both the fastest and slowest download speeds among the largest cities in the United States. Austin clocked the fastest average download speeds of 841 Kbps, while El Paso hit the bottom of the speed list at 483 kbps.

Not far behind Austin were San Francisco (828 Kbps), Boston (827 Kbps), Seattle (805 Kbps), and New York City (787 Kbps). The study looked at cities with populations over 500,000.

Cities noted for slow download speeds include Forth Worth (571 Kbps), Oklahoma City (518 Kbps), Albuquerque (537 Kbps) and Denver (550 Kbps).

From a service provider perspective, cable had the upper hand with four major MSOs, including Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) at 941 Kbps, Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) at 874 Kbps, Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) at 868 Kbps, and Cox Communications at 800 Kbps, topping the speed charts. Rounding out the top six service providers with the fastest download speeds were Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) with 799 Kbps and 737 Kbps, respectively.

As a company that provides software which makes it easier for consumers to download gaming and large streaming video files, Pando's work has been embraced by a number of the major telcos and cable operators that participate in the P4P working group.

Having a list of the cities, states and service providers with the fastest download speeds can give bandwidth-hungry consumers greater insight into where they might be able to get the best service experience.
