C Spire ramps UC capabilities with Callis Communications acquisition

C Spire is making a big splash in the cloud services market by reaching a deal to acquire Mobile, Ala.-based Callis Communications, a provider of cloud-based unified communications as a service (UCaaS) solutions for businesses.

Terms of the deal, which still requires FCC approval, were not disclosed.

This acquisition is just of one of many moves C Spire has made to enhance its presence in the business and consumer broadband market segments.

To appeal to more business customers, the service provider broke ground on a $20 million Tier III+ data center in Starkville, Miss., which will be used to provide enterprise cloud services and solutions to businesses located in the Southeast.

By acquiring Callis, an early cloud-based UC provider, C Spire will gain a host of new cloud-based telephony, data, security, email and collaboration services.

C Spire's timing to purchase Callis comes at a time when UCaaS adoption is growing. According to a recent MarketsandMarkets report, the UCaaS market is forecast to grow to $7.62 billion by 2018.
