CableLabs' Green to retire in late 2009

Richard Green, the only chief executive cable TV technology standards group CableLabs has had in its 20-year history, is planning to retire when his current contract runs out in December 2009. That leaves the agency a lot of time to find a replacement, but big shoes to fill, as Green has been an influential figure across the entire telecom industry over the years. During his tenure, the cable TV industry has used his agency's standards, such as DOCSIS and PacketCable, to become a leading force in the broadband and telephony services markets.

The DOCSIS standard is now entering its 3.0 phase, and many cable TV carriers are set to adopt the technology, which could give them a counter-punch to fiber deployment by telcos.
