Cisco acquires ClearAccess, boosts residential network management capabilities

Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) is going to the acquisition well again this week to add more capabilities to its software vision, by moving to acquire ClearAccess, an early developer of TR-69-based platforms that provision and manage residential devices like modems and home networking gateways.

Not included in the purchase is ClearAccess' SmartRG Gateways, which will be spun out as a separate company.

By purchasing ClearAccess, which will augment the Cisco Prime network management software portfolio, Cisco will give its service provider customers new tools to manage the customer's home network, including monitoring and managing bandwidth usage, parental controls and troubleshooting.

When the acquisition is complete, the ClearAccess team will be integrated into the Cisco Network Management Technology Group.

While neither company revealed the financial terms of the transaction, Cisco expects to close the acquisition following customary closing conditions by the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2012.

Following a companywide reorganization in 2011, Cisco has been hot on the acquisition trail lately with a clear focus on software companies. In addition to ClearAccess, the vendor recently announced its intent to acquire software and conditional access provider NDS and earlier, the AXIOSS division from COMPTEL.
