Cisco wrests top spot back from Huawei in service provider core routing market: report

After the completion of this year's first quarter, Cisco regained the top spot from Huawei in the service provider core routing market.

Juniper Networks followed Cisco and Huawei in the vendor standings, according to a report by Dell'Oro Group.

Overall, the worldwide service provider core router market increased 7% year-over-year from the first quarter last year. The market growth was driven by telecommunications and cloud operators upgrading networks with 100 Gigabit Ethernet technologies. According to the report, 100 GE router port shipments hit a record level in the most recent first quarter.

“Network operators are benefiting from lower prices of 100 GE products to add capacity to their backbone and metro networks—the volume of 100 GE port shipments almost doubled year-over-year,” said Shin Umeda, vice president at Dell’Oro Group, in a statement. “Demand for core routers was strong in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe, more than offsetting lower sales in North America."

The report said that 5G upgrades had a slight impact on the service provider edge router market, which increased 2% year over year.
