Cloudian bows new object storage solution for VMware Cloud Provider Platform

Cloudian today announced a fully native S3-compatible object storage system for VMware Cloud Providers that's managed from VMware vCloud Director.

Cloudian said its solution gives VMware Cloud Providers a scalable, cost effective and feature-rich storage foundation for serving up new and enhanced valued-add services to their customers. VMware vCloud Director is a component of VMware Cloud Provider Platform.

Customers will be able to achieve their capacity-intensive data protection, management and analytics goals by using the growing ecosystem of S3-compatible applications. Simple Storage Service (S3) is a scalable, high-speed, web-based cloud storage service designed for online backup and archiving of data and applications.

"This new offering does for unstructured data – such as images and files – what vSAN (virtual storage area networking) does for structured data: it provides an integrated storage solution that is provisioned and managed within the vCD framework," said VMware's Ari Paul, product marketing for VMware Cloud Provider Platform, in a Tuesday blog post. "Furthermore, Object Storage for vCloud Director enables a limitlessly scalable storage pool, where up to an exabyte of data can be managed within a single namespace, and at far less cost than other storage types."

Within the public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) market, IDC forecasts that cloud storage services revenues will reach $20 billion in 2019 and more than double to $44 billion by 2022.

At the same time, the S3 API has emerged as the de facto standard for cloud storage and the common language for integrating on-premises and cloud storage in hybrid clouds. Independent cloud providers are well equipped to capitalize on the emerging market opportunities because of their specialization, multi-source flexibility and geographic diversity, according to Cloudian.

In addition to fully native S3 API compatibility, Cloudian Object Storage offers the ability to start small and grow without interruption to an exabyte of storage. Other key Cloudian features include multi-tenant resource pooling, integrated management tools such as billing and quality of service controls, data encryption and Write Once, Read Many (WORM) for security and compliance, and geo-distribution for easily managing storage across multiple data centers.

The VMware vCloud Director integration consists of two elements; Cloudian Object Storage and VMware vCloud Director Object Storage Extension. For VMware Cloud Providers, the platform enables use cases such as:

• Storage-as-a-service

• Backup-as-a-service

• Archive-as-a-service

• Container storage services, with VMware PKS.

"Furthermore, a growing ecosystem of S3-compatible applications create many other services options," Paul said. "Whether in big data, healthcare, media and entertainment, video surveillance or others, a scalable, S3-compatible platform gives CSPs new opportunities to build differentiated services offerings.

"Designed exclusively to support the S3 API, Cloudian Object Storage features a native S3 API implementation and offers this industry’s best S3 compatibility. This makes it an ideal platform for S3-compatible services offerings and software development."
