Comcast Business ramps up fiber, Ethernet availability in Florida's Palm Beach County

Comcast Business (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is so confident about its service options in Florida's Palm Beach County that it is enhancing the network there with new fiber-based Ethernet and Internet services for area businesses and school districts.

Although the company did not disclose the dollar amount of the investment other than to say it was investing "millions" of dollars, the move reflects another notable initiative to ramp up its addressable business customer base.

Similar to other recent network upgrades it has made in Atlanta, New York and Vermont, the new fiber-based Ethernet network in Palm Beach County can deliver speeds up to 10 Gbps.

Economic Council of Palm Beach County President Daniel Martell said in a release that Comcast's move to upgrade its facilities will not only provide more services to existing businesses, but also could attract new ones to come to the area.

"The increased bandwidth and additional business services that will be offered because of Comcast's investment in our community will not only help businesses already located here, but will also serve as an additional selling point to attract new ones to our already growing area," Martell said.

Comcast Business Ethernet Services has four unique service options: Ethernet Private Line, Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL), Ethernet Network Service and Ethernet Dedicated Internet.

This latest network build reflects Comcast Business' aggressive movement into the Ethernet services space. Comcast has built out an Ethernet network that already spans more than 145,000 miles of fiber across 39 states and the District of Columbia.

The service provider rose to the sixth spot on Vertical Systems Group's latest Ethernet Leaderboard. It's likely that if its proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) goes through the service provider will be an even more powerful force to challenge not only incumbent telcos like AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ), but also Level 3, which enhanced its stake in the Ethernet market by purchasing tw telecom last year.
