Comcast to supply GigE services to Host.net, enhances data center connectivity reach

Comcast Business (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is offering Ethernet services to Host.net, a Florida-based managed services and data center provider, an agreement that enhances the cable MSO reach into the data center market.

Through this agreement, Host.net's data center will use Comcast's Ethernet services to connect its services with its customers that conduct large file transfers and bandwidth-intensive applications via its Smart Cloud Architecture.

Host.net's Smart Cloud Architecture is available in a number of major U.S. metro regions in North America such as Ashburn, Va., New York City, and Miami and portions of Europe and Latin America.

One of the interesting tenets of Comcast Business' service is that Host.net's customers will have the option to scale their capacity as business demands dictate. These customers will have access to Comcast Business' suite Ethernet connectivity options, including Ethernet Dedicated Internet, Ethernet Private Line, Ethernet Virtual Private Line and Ethernet Network Service.

Comcast Business has continued to scale its data center reach. Today, the service provider has connected over 350 data centers to its network in the U.S. While Comcast Business is hardly alone in delivering Ethernet and fiber services to data center providers it's a way the service provider can extend its Ethernet reach through an alternative indirect channel with the potential to upsell additional IP-based services.

Despite being a late entrant in the Ethernet game, Comcast Business continues to enhance its foothold with wholesale and retail customers.

According to Vertical Systems Group, Comcast Business was one of the fastest growing companies on the research firm's year-end 2014 U.S. Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard, taking a sixth-place position. However, its position will be challenged by Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR), which is now in the process of purchasing Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Bright House Networks.
