Cox lights 1 Gig residential Internet service in Oklahoma

Cox is now officially offering its 1 Gbps broadband Gigablast service to select customers in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, laying a new challenge to AT&T (NYSE: T).

Similar to earlier markets where it has launched the service like Providence, R.I., Cox is focusing on offering the service to residents who live in new housing developments in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

In total, Cox now offers Gigablast service in parts of 10 states with plans to bring gigabit speeds to all of its markets by the end of the year by deploying DOCSIS 3.1 technology on its existing hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network.

Eligible customers who purchase the 1 Gbps service will get the latest version of a high-speed Wi-Fi router, one terabyte of cloud storage, Cox Security Suite and Family Protection, and 10 email boxes each with 15 gigabytes of storage.

While offering 1 Gbps is certainly a key priority for Cox and other broadband service providers, the cable MSO continues to enhance the traditional speed packages it offers over its traditional HFC network.

Throughout 2015, the service provider upped the speed of its High Speed Ultimate tier to 200 Mbps. The service provider also increased the speeds of its two main Internet products: Internet Preferred, from 25 to 50 Mbps and High Speed Internet Premier, from 50 to 100 Mbps.
