Cox is Verizon's latest patent suit target

Looking to extend its streak of success in VoIP patent infringement lawsuits, Verizon Communications has filed a lawsuit against Cox Communications over eight patents it says the cable TV company violated with its VoIP service. The suit could hint that telcos who sued Vonage for patent infringement and subsequently landed big settlements may now have their targets set on their arch rivals in the cable TV industry.

No other suits have been filed yet, but if this one goes anywhere, you can bet it won't be the last, as telcos look for more ways to beat up on cable TV competitors at a time when the largest among them have been hurting financially and competitively.
