Deutsche Telekom AG's International Carrier Sales & Solutions (ICSS) unit, the German telecommunications giant's wholesale arm, has joined the Equinix Ethernet Exchange, in a move to expand the company's international Ethernet coverage.
Hooking Deutsche Telekom's ICSS to Platform Equinix is a major win for the exchange host as DT is the largest carrier in Europe. To its benefit, Bonn, Germany-based Deutsche Telekom will be able to expand its own Ethernet presence internationally.
DT's involvement in the Equinix Ethernet Exchange may be evidence that large carriers continue to look for additional, affordable ways to expand their Ethernet reach.
In recent years, as Ethernet has surged in popularity and become the basis for greater competition among carriers in major markets, many carriers have been seeking ways to grow their reach while still using standards-based offerings and carrier-grade sales channels to find new customers.
The Marketplace hub offering that Equinix introduced last fall directly addresses that trend.
The Equinix Ethernet Exchange has 58 members, ranging from telcos to cloud services providers, with coverage in about 100 different countries. The announcement about DT coming on board arrives the same week that Equinix said it was building a new data center in Zurich, and may be set to build new data centers or expand existing ones in other markets.
