Since March Stein has served as the company's interim CEO and as CFO since July 2004, as well as its chief investment officer from 2004 to 2014.

Dennis Singleton, Digital Realty's chairman, said what  drove the board's decision to appoint Stein as CEO was that he "created impressive momentum in the business and made great strides in strengthening Digital Realty's operating and financial performance" during his tenure as interim CEO of the company.

Stein's appointment follows what the company said was a comprehensive search process conducted by a special committee of the board of directors in conjunction with Spencer Stuart, a leading executive search firm.

In the immediate term, Stein will continue to serve both as CEO and CFO while the company searches for a permanent successor.

Digital Realty has been increasing its profile in the data center and cloud services market over the past year, garnering partnerships with the likes of Level 3 Communications and newcomers like AMS-IX, which established a PoP in its 365 Main Street facility in San Francisco.
