Docker and Arm team up for development of cloud, edge and IoT software

Docker and Arm have joined forces help cloud developers build applications for cloud, edge, and IoT environments on Arm's technologies.

With increasing amounts of data being created by IoT and intelligent devices, the partnership will work toward making centralized processing more efficient and less expensive by combining Docker's container platform with Arm's various compute platforms.

The companies are working together to provide what they claim is the first frictionless cloud-native unified software development and delivery model for cloud, edge and IoT devices. The two companies' common software pipeline allows developers to remove the dependencies of applications from the infrastructure while gaining delivery and production frameworks.

Enterprises stand to benefit from the partnership through direct cloud cost savings and increased efficiencies by enabling Docker developers to become Arm developers.

"The pervasiveness of Arm-powered technologies across the global internet infrastructure market is unmatched and now nearly two million Docker developers will be able to build and scale applications for the cloud and these connected devices quickly and securely. From product integration and technology innovation to a joint go-to-market approach, this partnership empowers enterprises to create new services and drive differentiation at the edge."

The two companies also announced they were making Docker-based solutions available to the Arm developer ecosystem as an extension of the Arm Neoverse platform, which means millions of Arm developers can now leverage Docker-based solutions to build and deploy their applications more quickly and easily across a wide range of applications from cloud to the edge to devices.

"Bringing together Docker's comprehensive platform with Arm's vast hardware and software ecosystem gives developers a simplified experience and delivery model for cloud, edge, and IoT applications."

The first phase of the partnership is focused on delivering a seamless developer environment, starting with the integration of Arm capabilities into the Docker Desktop Community. The fruits of the collaboration will be available through Docker's commercial enterprise offerings.

The two companies will provide a Docker Enterprise Engine for Amazon EC2 A1 instances powered by AWS Graviton Processors that feature 64-bit Arm Neoverse cores and custom silicon designed by AWS, which allow organizations to achieve up to 45% in cost savings when running their scale-out containerized applications on Arm, backed by commercial support from Docker.

Docker and Arm will demonstrate the integration of Arm into the Docker Desktop Community at next week's DockerCon conference in San Francisco.
