Google Fiber invites residents to sign up for 1 Gbps FTTH service

Google Fiber (Nasdaq: GOOG) has told residents who live in Provo, Utah, that they can now sign up for its new 1 Gbps Fiber to the Home (FTTH) service.

The company will give consumers three service options to choose: the Gigabit Internet plan, a dual play Gigabit Internet and TV plan and the Free Internet plan.

Each of these options comes with its own price points.

The Gigabit Internet plan offers a 1 Gbps-based Internet connection for $70 a month, while the Gigabit + TV plan is $120 a month. Finally, the Free Internet plan offers up to 5/1 Mbps broadband speeds for a one-time $30 installation fee with no monthly cost for about seven years.

John Richards, head of Operations for Google Fiber in Provo, said in a blog post that if you're a customer who lives in "Grandview, North Provo, Southeast Provo or the Foothills fiberhoods, we're planning to bring Fiber to your area later this spring and summer."

Existing Veracity customers who missed the early-access opportunity to get the FTTH service are being told to go to the company's website to sign up for service. These customers have until Feb. 28 to choose their Google Fiber plan.

Provo is a unique market for Google Fiber. Unlike its buildout in Kansas City and its impending move in Austin, Texas, Provo is the first city where it purchased another provider to establish a FTTH foothold. It struck a deal with the city to buy the struggling iProvo fiber network and update the existing network.

In November, the service provider began installing its first FTTH customers in Provo.

While Google Fiber is just really getting underway in Provo, industry watchers will be eyeing how its competitors, particularly CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) and Comcast, (Nasdaq: CMCSA) respond.

While not identifying Provo as a possible destination, CenturyLink has publicly stated that given the positive results it saw in its Omaha, Neb., and Las Vegas trials, it would consider other markets to deploy FTTH.
