Infinera (Nasdaq: INFN) and Nissho Electronics on Wednesday completed a demonstration of the DTN-X platform, delivering 8 Tbps capacity over 800 km of Dispersion Shifted Fiber (DSF).
During the demonstration, which was held at the NET Frontier Center, Infinera and Nissho showed how 100G coherent optical technologies with DSF assets could be used by service providers that are migrating to 100G or already have deployed 100G in their networks.
While DSF fiber has been deployed throughout Japan, it has been a challenge to deploy DWDM over long distances economically. This means that service providers have to use expensive L-band technology to get the same quality over DSF fiber.
Infinera's DTN-X, which has been accepted in a growing base of Tier 1 service providers, incorporates 500G Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC) and a FlexCoherent Processor to enable software-configurable coherent modulation.
When used without DSF fiber, Infinera claims it can deliver 8 Tbps over 2,500 km when using QPSK modulation. Flexible modulation was another key point of the demonstration. The FlexCoherent capabilities allow service providers to software-select different modulation formats including QPSK and BPSK to optimize both reach and capacity. In addition, the demonstration showed how a provider can provision 100 GbE serviced in less than 100 seconds.
Having these capabilities on hand means that service providers will be able to use their existing fiber plant to deliver multi-Terabit, long haul WDM transmission.
