Level 3 extends CDN services to public sector via WITS-3 contract

Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT) on Tuesday began offering its content delivery network (CDN) services on the Washington Interagency Telecommunications System (WITS 3) contract.

WITS-3 is contract vehicle that provides negotiated prices for telecom services for agencies that reside in the National Capital Region (NCR).

By offering CDN services on WITS-3, Level 3 said it can help agencies reduce "infrastructure costs and better support growing demands for managing big data."

Since the CDN services are cloud-based, agencies will also be able to more effectively comply with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) mandates such as its Cloud First Policy, an initiative that is designed to streamline and reduce duplication in procuring IT services.

Both defense and civilian agencies will be able to take advantage of a host of CDN services, including content delivery, caching and download, and streaming video.

In addition to being a prime contractor on the General Services Administration (GSA) Networx Enterprise contract, Level 3 and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) are the two primary contract WITS-3 contract holders.

Given Level 3's expertise in CDN and global reach—two elements that were bolstered when it completed its acquisition of the former Global Crossing—extending this service to the federal government shows that it is presenting itself as not just another telecom provider, but a partner that's listening to their goals and requirements. Also, agencies can get CDN services to drive more collaboration across divisions right from a source they already work with instead of having to work with a separate third-party.
