Level 3 extends metro network presence into Argentina, Colombia

Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT) has launched an expansion into the Latin America market by building two new metro networks in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Bogota, Colombia.

With the installation of these networks, Level 3 will provide up to 40 Gbps links to end-customers.

Business and wholesale customers will also have the option of building their own backbones and dedicated networks, in addition to being able to interconnect with Level 3's and others' data centers to build storage area network (SAN), disaster recovery and cloud services solutions.

The network facilities were built in a future-proof fashion. Each of the network nodes that Level 3 built in Bogota and Buenos Aires have a total capacity of 80x40 Gbps with the option of upgrading to 80x100 Gbps when needed.

These new network connections could appeal to various entities including data center providers, carrier points of presence, and financial centers.

Latin America has been a major regional growth target for Level 3. Prior to the expansion into to these two cities, the service provider had already been operating metro networks in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Its efforts in Latin America, which were bolstered through its acquisition of Global Crossing, continue to pay off. In Q4 2012, the service provider reported that Latin America revenues rose 5 percent sequentially to $183 million, up from $177 million in Q3 2012.
