Level 3 to provide Gbps links to Social Security Administration

Level 3 Communications' (Nasdaq: LVLT) work on GSA's Networx Enterprise contract paid off as this week the competitive wholesale provider has been tapped by the Social Security Administration to provide wavelength services.

As part of the contract, Level 3 will provide SSA with multiple 10 Gbps wavelength circuits that will be used to connect a number of SSA's data center locations with a built-in growth path for future needs.

By providing government agency customers solutions that Ed Morche, senior vice president of Level 3's Federal Markets, says aren't "off the shelf," the new network connections will provide SSA "with geographically diverse optical network paths and our custom-build network solutions."

With Morche at the helm of the government solutions team and a large fiber network to boot, Level 3 in recent years has been raising its profile in the lucrative public sector market, winning not only a seat on the Networx Enterprise contract vehicle but also as the second holder of GSA's Washington Interagency Telecommunications System-3 (WITS-3) contract.
