Lumos steps up 1 Gbps FTTH drive with Botetourt County, Va. launch

Lumos Networks may be focusing more of its attention on wireless backhaul and business customers, but the service provider's move to bring its 1 Gbps FTTH service to Botetourt County, Va., shows it has responded to the Tier 2 market need for higher speed broadband.

Leveraging its existing FTTH network, Botetourt County marks the second 1 Gbps market for Lumos, following the initial launch in May 2015 in Virginia's Allegheny Highlands region.

As the only ILEC to offer 1 Gbps in these two Virginia markets, the service provider said that it expects to equip its entire FTTH footprint with the service by the end of the year.

The service provider is seeing decent subscriber growth in its FTTH network.

During the third quarter, Lumos reported that fiber broadband subscribers increased by over 31 percent year-over-year, while the average broadband speed increased by over 50 percent to nearly 30 Mbps.

At the end of the third quarter period, Lumos passed 19,000 premises with fiber, up 12 percent year-over-year. It also completed a Rural Utilities Service (RUS) funded build in the second quarter of 2015 where it passed 5,300 sites with fiber.
