OTN switching finally all the rage

Light Reading reports that Alcatel-Lucent is the latest network equipment vendor developing a platform with optical transport network switching capabilities. The news comes a couple of weeks after LR reported on Ciena Corp.'s plans (though Ciena didn't confirm) for its next-generation CoreDirector platform, including OTN switching, and several months after Huawei Technologies also talked of plans for OTN switching.

OTN switching could bring the telecom industry closer to the once-lofty vision of all-optical networks, though more practically speaking, carriers might seek out OTN switching in more network elements as a way of better handling the effects of major ongoing growth in bandwidth demand on their transport networks
