Who: Pac-West Telecomm
Vitals: This company is based in Stockton, Calif., and was founded in 1980. It is primarily a carrier's carrier offering services such as managed modem, foreign exchange, dial access and other local exchange solutions for VoIP providers, ISPs, cable TV companies and other would-be carriers.
Why you should care: An ambitious expansion that took Pac-West outside of its native territory to the East Coast resulted in bankruptcy, but Columbia Ventures Corp. acquired Pac-West, brought it out of bankruptcy, and hired a new CEO who has the company re-thinking its expansion to focus on growth in its native markets closer to the West Coast.
