Paris eyes muni-EPON

A French government entity that oversees power and telecom needs for municipalities in and around Paris is mulling the construction of an Ethernet passive optical network to serve the broadband needs of public buildings in the area. Municipal fiber networks are not an entirely new idea, and though star-crossed muni-WiFi projects have gotten all the buzz, muni-fiber is a more appropriate option for fiber-rich markets, France included.

There are several other fiber networks that are either being built or are already operational in France. In the U.S., governments or consortia interested in building similar networks have been met with opposition by carriers.
