PON for cable nearing reality

Passive optical network architectures are closer to being a commercial reality for cable TV operators, who reportedly have been pushed toward PON by master-community real estate developers who fancy themselves fiber-to-the-home proponents. Motorola is nearing trials for PON-like RF Over Glass (the unfortunately-abbreviated RFOG) technology and other vendors are already in trials of PON for cable networks.

But, what will happen when the ongoing mortgage crisis and its ripple effects force more of those real estate cowboys to reconsider their grand cookie-cutter suburb plans?
