Ribbon taps Scarfo to be EVP of products, R&D

Ribbon Communications has named Tony Scarfo as EVP of products and research & development, marking the latest in a series of management shifts the company has taken following the integration of the former Sonus and GENBAND under one common company brand.

In his new role, Scarfo will oversee the company’s product lifecycle management and solutions road map strategy.

Scarfo is hardly a stranger to Ribbon Communications. From 2013 to 2016, he served as executive vice president of technology and business development at Sonus, where he oversaw the company’s solutions road map across cloud, video, mobile, virtualization and Unified Communications technologies and helped Sonus deliver one of its SBC 7000 session border controllers (SBCs).

He also previously served in several other leadership positions at Sonus including SVP of technology development and VP of product management and business development. Sonus combined with GENBAND in 2017 in a series of merger transactions to form Ribbon.

Earlier, Scarfo held roles that spanned technology, product management, marketing, channel, business development and sales leadership roles at well-known companies including Polycom, ECI Telecom, Juniper Networks, Unisphere Networks, Lucent Technologies, and AT&T.

This latest management appointment is just one of several changes Ribbon Communications’ CEO Fritz Hobbs has made since taking the CEO reins of the company in December.

The vendor continues to make progress with advancing its SBC as a Service vision, winning deals with Verizon and Panama’s Cable Onda. Verizon revealed in January that Ribbon was its SBC partner for its new Virtual Network Service, while Cable Onda plans to leverage Ribbon’s SBC 5210 to replace its legacy SBC platform and future-proof its ability to meet the demand for SIP-based services including unified communications.
