Vitals: This telco is based in Ellettsville, IN, and began offering service in 1922. It is still family-owned and claims to be the largest independent broadband service provider in Indiana with more than 30,000 access lines.

Why you should care: Smithville, which already offers DSL-based broadband, just announced a plan to invest $90 million in a broadband fiber upgrade project.
